Nick and I stumbled upon another gulf coast tradition. Naturally it involves food. Louisiana and Mississippi are not the most obese states in the nation for naught. Mardi Gras doesn't only mean beads, masks, and drunkenness. Apparently it also means you can buy a delicious seasonal cake at your local grocery store bakery!
King's cake is based on the three kings who came to see baby Jesus. Each cake comes with a small plastic baby that you hide in it (Jesus). One lucky person gets to chomp down on a plastic baby! It has sprinkles and cinnamon and sometimes other fillings that are equally delicious. Not sure what cinnamon has to do with the wise men, but I'll take it!
And there you have it. King's cake. Who knew?

Hi Kaley,
I just stumbled across your blog and saw your king cake. I'm an event planner in the Carolina's and had a couple who decided to do a Mardi Gras themed wedding last September and in place of a traditional wedding cake had a 4 tiered display with a small cake for the top tier decorated in green, gold and purple with an edible mardi gras mask and then assorted cupcakes and king cakes on the other 3 tiers. King cake is a Mardi Gras tradition as well. I'll have pictures on our web site of their wedding soon. I have a couple on our Facebook page of their masks, etc. I've pasted a link with the History Behind the King Cake for you. You have a cute blog and an adorable baby (as well as adorable 4 legged babies) Please stop by and visit our blogs sometime we'd love to get to know you!
Happy blogging!!
Elizabeth

Have you tasted the Kings Cake? It looks like bread with sprinkles on top. Just sayin...

Ok, sorry to be the grammar police, but it's King Cake. And yes, have you tried it? It's delish. Next time you come over, we're having one so you can write another post about how much better your life is not that you've tasted one.
